Giesler Legacy

Over 100 years of boat building

In 1921, blacksmith Barney Giesler found himself dissatisfied with the performance of his fishing boat on the choppy waters of Lake Nipissing. Drawing upon his craftsmanship, he built a boat better suited to the lake's conditions. The quality of his creation caught the attention of a tourist, who promptly purchased it. Subsequent boats were being bought up as fast Barney could build them. Recognizing the demand, Barney established B. Giesler & Sons Boat Builders in Powassan, Ontario, in 1927.

Craftsmanship passed down through generations

Barney's dedication to quality and craftsmanship was inherited by his four sons—Pete, Joe, Carl, and Willie—each contributing uniquely to the business. Pete managed the books, Joe specialized in parts and wood, Carl focused on finishing, and Willie handled motors, eventually founding Giesler Marine.

Today, the tradition continues with Gerry Giesler, Barney's grandson, at the helm. Gerry began his journey in the family business at age 12, performing tasks like sweeping floors and assisting with boat assembly. After a period working in civil engineering, he returned to Giesler Boats, bringing with him a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern insights. Gerry's nephew, Matthew Giesler is the fourth generation boatbuilder preparing to carry on the tradition for the future.

Timeless techniques and materials

Giesler Boats are renowned for their use of British Columbia red cedar and Ontario white cedar, materials chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Each boat is handcrafted using the same molds and patterns established by Barney in 1927, a testament to the enduring quality of their design.

The construction process involves steaming cedar planks to make them pliable, then carefully bending and securing them around wooden forms. This meticulous method ensures each boat is both functional and a work of art.

A heritage recognized worldwide

Over the decades, Giesler Boats have garnered a reputation for excellence, with models like the Nipissing, Georgian Bay, and Cartopper becoming staples among fishing lodges and enthusiasts across Canada and beyond. Their boats have been shipped internationally, reaching destinations such as Switzerland, Germany, and South America.

In recent years, Giesler Boats has embraced sustainable innovations by offering Elco electric propulsion systems on select models, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern, eco-friendly technology.

Preserving a legacy

The Giesler family's commitment to quality ensures that each boat is not only a vessel but a legacy piece, capable of lasting for generations with proper care. Their dedication to handcrafted excellence continues to set them apart in an era dominated by mass production.
